The Ram softball team won both games of a doubleheader in Gilbert Tuesday and stretched their record in the Heart of Iowa Activities Conference to 14-0 with a 24-5 overall record. The Rams will have at least a share of the conference title.
The first game was a 12-0 shut-out for the Rams in four innings. Pitcher Marissa Promes struck out four batters, walked none and allowed two hits.
The Rams scored seven runs in the third inning, all of them unearned. Emma Saddoris hit a three run home run, her third homer for the season. The game ended after four innings when the Rams posted another five runs. Saddoris had four runs batted in for the game. Jenna Beyers hit a double and two singles for an RBI, Emily Christensen hit a double and a single, and Tressa Rasmussen had a single and grabbed three RBI. Hannah Onken also hit a single that scored a run.
The Rams won the second game 5-1. The Tigers’ run was an earned run in the seventh inning. Promes struck out seven batters, walked one, and allowed two hits.
The Rams’ bats were quieter in the second game as they got only five hits. The team earned one run in the first inning and one in the seventh, but scored three unearned runs in the third inning. Onken hit a double for two RBIs but injured her ankle in the play at second base and did not play the rest of the game. Christensen hit a double and a single for two RBIs, and Kayla Mobley and Bailey Godwin hit one single each.
The losses put the Gilbert Tigers at 4-20 on the season and 2-12 in the HOIAC.
The Rams host the Saydel Eagles at the city field east of the fairgrounds in Jefferson Wednesday. A win will clinch the HOIAC title for the Rams. The Eagles are 6-5 in the HOIAC.
